Each year on March 8th, the world comes together to honour the cultural, economic, political, and social achievements of women around the globe. It is also an urgent call to action for every individual as each of us, regardless of gender, has an important role to play in accelerating women’s equality both today and every day.
At Clark Wilson, we honour the incredible women who have shaped our firm, including our first female lawyer, Norma Christie, K.C., a true pioneer in the legal profession.
Norma Bell Christie shattered expectations and broke barriers in law, proving that determination and intellect could thrive in a male-dominated field. After an accomplished career in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service and Canada’s External Affairs, she pursued law at UBC, graduating second in her class at the age of 39. From articling at Clark Wilson in the 1950s to making history as British Columbia’s first female Assistant Prosecutor in Assize Court, she paved the way for future generations. Throughout her career, she championed discussions on women’s legal rights, contributing to public lectures and shaping the evolving role of women in law, leaving an enduring legacy in Canadian law.
Today, Clark Wilson is proud to be led by Emily Clough as Managing Partner, Synthia Kloot as Chief Operating Officer, with a talented team of over 68% women—continuing the legacy of trailblazers like Norma Christie.
